The Fifth National Report on Biodiversity is comprised of three major parts, concluding remarks and seven annexes:Part one of the report presents updated information on biodiversity status, trends, and threats and implications for human well-being. In part two the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), its implementation, and mainstreaming of biodiversity are discussed. Part three describes the progress made towards the 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the contributions to the relevant 2015 Targets of the Millennium Development Goals. Additional information were included in the seven annexes.
The Fifth national report has been developed under the enabling activity project “First NBSAP for Iraq and Development of Fifth National Report to the CBD”. The Ministry of Environment is implementing this project with the support of UNEP-ROWA and the GEF, it has organized four events to gather all the stakeholders that will be involved in adopting and implementing or giving technical advice for the NBSAP. The national report was developed according to the fifth component of the project detailed plan, approved by the GEF, and taking into account the specific guidelines issued by the CBD Secretariat. The report is considered a milestone in the long, complex process that will hopefully in the end lead to preserving biodiversity of the country.
